The cruise season in Fredericia starts May 10 on Ascension Day

This year's cruise season in Fredericia begins on Ascension Day with the arrival of the Braemar ship from the English cruise line Fred. Olsen, that calls the city for the third time. Like the previous years, Braemar is on a Danish cruise, and the mainly English cruise passengers are going to spend Ascension Day either in the city or on trips to the area's attractions.

MV Braemar arrives at the cruise quay Thursday, May 10, at 8.00 am and as usual, it will be received with music and cannon salutes. The ship from 1993 is 195m long and has up to 929 guests and 371 crew members. The ship is from Southampton, and before arriving at Fredericia, it has been in Aabenraa. After visiting Fredericia, Braemar sails to Hundested, Copenhagen and Aalborg before returning to Southampton.

A festive atmosphere in Fredericia
Even though it is a bank holiday, the 900 cruise guests will not arrive to a closed city. On the occasion of the cruise call, the shops in Frederica are open and the city will hum of activities and life. Fredericia Municipality, Fredericia Shopping, ADP and Kanalbyen have worked hard to ensure that the guests are received by a city in a festive atmosphere. As something new, a so-called “cozy town” has been created at the J.B. Nielsens Square, where guests are met by the best "allotment garden atmosphere" on their way to the city. All activities are of course also for the benefit of citizens and other tourists in the city.

Mayor of Fredericia, Jacob Bjerregaard, is excited about the positive development of the cruise activities:

"This year, we will surely see the result of our initiatives to develop Fredericia as a cruise destination. We are proud to be one of Denmark's most popular destinations, and it is a good sign that things are happening in our local area. Cruise calls are another way that we can make ourselves an attractive and exciting municipality for both citizens and tourists", he says and continues:

"It is important to emphasize that our way of welcoming cruise ships is a project that involves the entire municipality. It requires good cooperation across the different institutions and companies. Through our close cooperation with ADP, Kanalbyen and Fredericia Shopping, many guides, volunteers, associations and the city's business life, we make a great effort at every cruise call, and I would like to thank everyone involved for the good teamwork. It is beneficial to all of us".

In addition to guided tours in Fredericia, tours to Egeskov Castle, the Funen Village/H.C. Andersen trip around Odense, the Museum of the Royal Jelling and a new panorama of the Little Belt have already been sold.

Several new cruise lines heading towards Fredericia
In connection with three of this year’s seven cruise calls, Fredericia receives four maiden calls from several new cruise lines that have chosen to call Fredericia for the first time.

"We are well on the way to harvest the fruits of our targeted sales and marketing efforts. With several new cruise lines visiting this year and the record-breaking 2019 season with 20 calls, we are very positive in terms of development. Next year, we look forward to welcoming Disney®. It is the first time that Disney® calls a provincial port, and it has definitely caught the interest of the cruise industry", says CEO of ADP, Nils Skeby.

"The 2018 season will not be a record-breaking year based on number of calls. However, when looking at cruise lines like Viking Cruises, Majestic International Cruises and AIDA that are visiting Fredericia for the first time; we will have the opportunity to develop new activities in the city this year. At the same time, our new guides get to work with cruise passengers which will prepare them in the best way possible to handle the 20 cruise ships booked so far for 2019", says Nils Skeby.
